Are You Stubborn?

Updated: Jan 19, 2020

Do you know someone who is stubborn? Maybe someone has even called you stubborn. I know for me personally, I’ve both been called stubborn and have also met plenty of stubborn people.

What comes to mind when you think of someone who is stubborn? Perhaps it is someone who is dead set on doing something one way and not willing to consider any other options….someone who can’t be reasoned with or as you might say “has already made up their mind”.

The reality is you don’t have to go very far to find stubborn people. Maybe it’s a roommate, a sibling, or even the person that looks back at you when you stare in the mirror!

In Isaiah 30:1-2, God describes “stubborn children” in an interesting way. He says that anyone who carries out a plan that is not His or who set out to do something without asking for His directions is stubborn! Not just that, but He tells us that when we do this we sin!

“ ‘Ah, stubborn children,’ declares the LORD, ‘who carry out a plan, but not mine, and who make an alliance, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin; who set out to go down to Egypt, without asking for my direction…” Isaiah 30:1-2 (ESV)

Do you typically ask God what His plans are or do you tend to ask Him to bless your plans? Would you say you ask God for His direction or ask Him to bless the direction you have decided to take?

We live in a world today with endless access to resources and information. With answers to almost all of our questions being just a Google search away, it’s tempting to think that we can navigate what the best course is for our lives!

But when we look at the life of Jesus we see something different! Jesus tells us He only did what He saw the Father doing (John 5:19). He quite literally had the world at His fingertips but submitted Himself to the will of The Father. And at the end of His time on earth He was able to say He completed all the work God had for Him (John 17:4).

We serve a God who not only has created works for you, works that only you can do, and that you are on this earth for that purpose, but we also serve a God who wants to reveal those things to you!

If you are a follower of Jesus then you probably want to live the life God has for you! He knows what is best for you and you want to experience that! But as scripture shows us, that can only happen if we ask for His direction, His counsel, and His plans!

So how can you better seek His plans, His counsel, His direction? He is standing by, ready and eager to show you His plans for you!

1. Can you recall a time that you have been stubborn? How would you characterize your attitude during that time?

2. Why might God call someone who doesn’t listen to Him stubborn?

3. What is one step you can take this week to better seek His direction in your life?
